Brain and beauty are two synonymous qualities. An individual with mental capabilities is sure to exhibit beauty in certain spheres of life. In this biography, we dish it hot as we narrate the events surrounding a certain young Nigerian lady, who specializes in painting. Naomi Oluwatimilehin Oladipo. A 24 year old, born in Oyo state, south western Nigeria. She hails from Ilesha, Osun state.
Born into a polygamous home, she is the fourth child of six from her mother. She initially, according to her, she did not consider going into fine art as a profession. Her studying fine art, was as a result of the advise provided by her parents. Although, she often found herself drawing and sketching in her junior high. “I often found myself making sketches at the back if my book” she said.
Studying fine art, was never an option she considered. She had her mind set on acting due to her natural talent in the field. “I would mimic in front of the mirror, doing a role play.” she claimed. But, having a mother who has the future of her children at heart, Naomi, was asked what field she plans to focus on when she is through with her senior high. “my mum was totally surprised at my studying dramatic arts in the university. She gave me a million reasons why I should further in fine and applied arts.” Naomi said. Being backed by her family, providing the support needed, Naomi decided to further in Fine and Applied arts even though, it took her time to think it through she explained, “I was initially angry about studying fine art in the university but then, I thought, this can’t be that bad?.”
Her love for fine art grew rapidly in 2006 with the support of her teacher in Senior High. Guiding her through each step and helping her improve on her creative thinking. The environment she grew up in has greatly influenced her art. According to her, her works exhibit high in-depth research and knowledge of her immediate environment. She keeps evolving and exploring different painting techniques to better herself. At present, she is digging deeper into the use of impasto, textured canvas, collage and mixed-media. While in the University, as a student of fine and applied art, she enrolled for an additional training at Ebenezer Studio, Ibadan, Oyo State (south west Nigeria).
Her thematic disposition spans from concepts captured from immediate environment which are socio-cultural, political and religious in nature. To her, painting gives her freedom also, exploring the innocenct character of children as a medium of study, due to their kind hearts and inter-personal relations. Indeed, her works portray these claims. Naomi, is a lady pursuing what she can do best. She is a young artist, who has the foresight for expansion. Networking with the right people in the right platforms to help her achieve her dreams and goals.
Asked about her projections for the future, she said, “I want to establish an identity that can be reckoned with in the world. I see myself as a trans-border artist. Giving back to the society by impacting younger generations by engaging them creatively.”
“challenges make you strong.” she said. The economic recession in Nigeria has made art materials more expensive than it should be and according to her notion, it is a general challenge to artists in Nigeria. Asked, if she has regrets so far, she said “I am fulfilled and blessed for choosing this path and I do not feel inferior as a lady in this industry. People appreciate my works and give good recommendations of me.” she said. Furthermore, giving up on her profession is an imposibilty. She sees life in it and it it her life.
Her works as a painter have been influenced by Harley Brown (Western painter) known for bold usage of colours; Edosa Oguigo for his masterly strokes and colours; Dotun Popoola and Jonathan Imafidor for their eclectism; Jide Kosoko for his vastness and patience.
